Aquatic Therapy Research and Development Center

The Establishment of Aquatic Therapy Research and Development Center

The Aquatic Therapy Research and Development Center provides the software and hardware facilities for the research and development of the techniques in aquatic therapy related industries. It can also provide trainings, education, and examinations for the professional aquatic therapists and managers. The goal of the center is to help the aquatic water therapy/recreation industry in Taiwan to being safer and healthier.

The overall plan is as the following:

Establish the instruction of aquatic exercise

With no limitation in body and weight conditions, aquatic exercise and physical fitness gradually gains its popularity. As the water resistance comes in all directions, no matter what kind of movement one makes, water provides the muscles with sufficient pressure. Under certain conditions, it is safer to doing exercise in the water than on the land (falling in water is less likely to cause injuries), and the impact received by the knees is much less stronger. Furthermore, the body heat can be easily relieved in the water so that even heavy sweaters do not have problem exercising in water.

In addition to keeping the swimming pool, many aquatic exercise equipments are added, such as water bikes, water walkers, water rowing machines, water stairs, water climbing machines, water abdominal machines, and water pulling machines.

Aquatic Exercise Area—Besides the water exercise and physical fitness area, the center establish the passive aquatic exercise area to meet the needs of different groups of people. These can help users to relieve the muscle pain in exercising and to motivate people to do the water exercises.

A. Passive Aquatic Exercise Area:

The passive aquatic exercise, such as SPA therapy or aquatic therapy, is done by providing muscle stimulus through water columns, water pressure, and the change of water floating. Water causes multiple stimuli when working on human body. Water pressure has complex effects on human body including on skin, cardiovascular, nerve and muscle, endocrine, heat exchange, recovery from tiredness, and so on. These effects can be partial or global. The advantages of aquatic exercise includes positively stimulate the ends of blood vessels and nerves. These improve the blood vessel system, facilitate both the partial and global body circulation, and relax the muscles.

In the recent years the nation has raised its awareness in health care, and thus there have been more and more SPA therapy centers established in the country. However, many people doubt the professionals in these SPA therapy centers. The constant news reports about dispute over SPA therapy have also built negative images of SPA therapy among people. Therefore, NTCN has established the Aquatic Exercise Area based on strong medical care professional knowledge, both theoretically and practically, and has designed the proper programs especially for the seniors, the disabled, and those with knee-joint injuries. We believe that these programs will act as a plus to the NTCN’s Research and Development Center for Aquatic Physical Fitness Techniques.

The facilities include:

B. Aromatherapy Program

The modern society starts to pay more and more attention to the traditional medicine, which includes fuming and steaming aromatherapy and heat therapy. As the research on such therapies has been gradually developed, the need for the design of the Aromatherapy Program is natural.

This program includes:

(a) Aroma Steam Room:

The Aroma Steam Room improves the effect of heat therapy by decreasing the cardiac loading, accelerating sweating, and strengthening the function of respiratory system. With the uses of the herbal aroma, its effect reaches the mental body.

(b) Aroma Sauna

The Aroma Sauna helps increase sweat volatility, reduce tiredness, relieve joint stiffness, and accelerate blood circulation by raising body temperature with artificial heat.
